SUMMARY:Biennale Zagreb: Mauro Lanza & Andrea Valle - Systema Naturae
DESCRIPTION:Systema Naturae is about discovery. It is a meditation on the process\, rather than the act. It depicts the ways in which we classify\, organise and most importantly give name to the minutiae of the natural world. The project draws inspiration from two traditions: phantasmagorical catalogues of animals\, plants\, and minerals\, such as the medieval bestiaries\, herbariums and lapidariums\, and Linnaeus’ taxonomy exhibited in his work Systema Naturae. \nEach composition in the cycle is structured as a catalogue: a collection of short pieces with fictitious Latin names thematises individual branches of nature or natural sciences. Through a four-part “play” – Regnum Animale (2013)\, Regnum Vegetabile (2014)\, Regnum Lapideum (2016) and Fossilia(2016/17) – Mauro Lanza and Andrea Valle created a vast\, wide-open metaphor of the world that reflects our own histories of observation and categorisation. Through an amalgam of medieval imagination and rational classification\, the cycle explores the way in which history and modernity can coexist in sound. \n/// \nComposer Mauro Lanza was born in Venice\, Italy. He is known for combining classical instruments with unconventional sources of sound such as toys\, sound machines\, and different found objects. His music is also often used in interdisciplinary projects such as dance and video-opera. \nAndrea Valle is a composer and researcher from the University of Turin\, whose work combines computer programming and analogue instruments. Starting with the experience of pain (and confrontation with hybridity\, otherness and detachment) in Panariello´s work\, the program clashes into the hyperbolic description of Gargantua’s gigantic body (Bertrand) and finally arrives at Khubeev’s paradoxical musical investigation of the body as a linguistic medium. Jahrhundert.\nDie Geschichte erzählt von einem Kind\, das allein auf einer abgeschiedenen indischen Insel aufwächst. Seine einzigen Gefährten sind wilde Tiere\, von denen eines die Rolle einer Elternfigur übernimmt und es aufzieht\, bis es eigenständig wird. Der Protagonist Hayy spricht in den ersten 50 Jahren seines Lebens nicht\, doch seine unstillbare Neugier führt ihn von einem sprachlich eingeschränkten Autodidakten zu einer systematischen Erforschung von Wissen\, die schließlich in einer umfassenden metaphysischen Perspektive mündet. Die Struktur des Romans zeichnet Hayys intellektuelle und spirituelle Entwicklung über die ersten fünf Jahrzehnte seines Lebens nach.\nIbn Tufails brillante literarische Technik\, die philosophische Tiefe seines Werkes in einen direkten und ansprechenden Stil zu kleiden\, inspirierte die Konzeption eines multimedialen Werks ohne gesprochene Worte. Stattdessen stehen Klang und Bild im Mittelpunkt. Hayys tiefe Neugier auf die natürlichen Gegebenheiten seiner Insel sowie seine intellektuellen und spirituellen Erkundungen transzendentaler Ideen bilden die Grundlage für ein immersives audiovisuelles Erlebnis mit Instrumenten und interaktiver Live-Elektronik.\nDie unkonventionelle Instrumentenbesetzung wurde so gewählt\, dass sie eine vielfältige Klangpalette bietet. Raumkonzepte spielen in der Musik eine zentrale Rolle\, um die Landschaften zu veranschaulichen\, mit denen Hayy interagiert. Die Flöte nimmt dabei eine besondere Stellung ein\, da sie von allen Instrumenten dem menschlichen Sprachklang am nächsten kommt. Das traditionelle östliche Instrument Oud vermittelt mit seiner einzigartigen Klanglichkeit die Wärme und Eleganz von Ibn Tufails Stil.

DESCRIPTION:On 29 October last\, Valencia was hit by a DANA that flooded a large part of the so-called region of l’Horta Sud\, causing innumerable material damages and fatalities. Ausgabe entgegen. Von Anfang an verstand sich das Projekt als Labor\, das mediale Verschränkungen umzusetzen versucht\, deren Fokus auf dem Impuls liegen. Texte wie auch der aktive Austausch zwischen Komponisten und Autoren liefern dabei Initialimpulse zu neuen Kompositionen. Nicht Vertonungen im klassischen Sinn sind dabei intendiert\, keine Übersetzungen mit Stimme oder Sprecher\, keine klanglichen Repräsentationen der Texte – gefragt ist vielmehr der konkrete Text als Movens in seinen zum Beispiel rhythmischen und syntaktischen Qualitäten\, in seinen klangsprachlichen Färbungen\, in seiner atmosphärischen oder thematischen Dichte\, als semantische Widerlager … Die Versuchsanordnung von „Text im Klang“ wird im Rahmen der einzelnen Jahrgänge dabei immer wieder leicht modifiziert: 2014 und 2016 dienten den Komponisten Texte verschiedener österreichischer Autoren in verschiedenen Paarbildungen als Impulsgeber\, bei den Aufführungen wurden Musik und Text teils verschränkt\, letztere von Schauspielern oder den Autoren selbst vorgetragen\, teils dabei auch live oder beispielsweise als bearbeitete Zuspielung in den musikalischen Part integriert. 2018 lag der Fokus für alle Komponisten auf einem konkreten Kurztext\, 2020 entstanden sowohl Text wie Musik zu einem gemeinsam erarbeiteten Thema völlig neu. 2022 wiederum war Ferdinand Schmatz‘ „das gehörte feuer. orphische skizzen“ der Ausgangspunkt der neuen Kompositionen\, die teils Fragmente des Textes sowohl akustisch als auch visuell einbezogen\, teils auch vom Autor selbst gelesen wurden. \nIn den künstlerischen Austausch wie Prozess eingebunden sind nicht zuletzt mit Schallfeld Ensemble auch von Beginn an die Interpreten\, die ihrerseits für die Realisierung mit den Komponierenden in enger Zusammenarbeit stehen und über die Jahre auch in unterschiedlichen instrumentalen Formationen zu erleben sind. \nFür 2024 hat Elfriede Jelinek ihre Zustimmung gegeben\, dass jeder ihrer zahlreichen Texte als Impuls und Ausgangspunkt für neue musikalische Werke herangezogen werden kann. Die Besetzung ist diesmal mit Schuberts Forellenquintettinstrumentierung eine klassische. Den Uraufführungen voran geht eine Einführung zu Elfriede Jelinek durch Claus Philipp\, der das Projekt auch als Vermittler zur Schriftstellerin und ihrem literarischen Ouevre\, aber auch ihrem musikalischen Background und ihrer (gesellschafts-)politischen Rolle begleitet hat. Einmal mehr bietet „Text im Klang“ auch am 18. Oktober ein dramaturgisch schlüssiges Programm und schließt tags darauf mit einem öffentlich zugängigen Brunch ab\, bei dem der Gesamtprozess des Projekts nochmals reflektiert und die Eindrücke mit dem Publikum ausgetauscht werden können. \nEin Projekt von impuls:\nAm 18. From the very beginning\, the project has seen itself as a laboratory\, where medial interlacings with a focal point on impulses are put into practice. In specific\, literary texts as well as the active exchange between composer and author hereby provide the initial impulses for new compositions. The intention of the project hereby does not pursue a classical setting such as words to music\, nor a simple translation of the words with voices\, nor tonal representations of the texts – what is called for is rather texts functioning as movens with their\, for example\, rhythmic and syntactic qualities\, in its tonal coloration\, its timbre\, in its atmospheric or thematic density\, as semantic abutment\, … Hereby the experimental setup of „Text im Klang” has always been slightly modified throughout the years: in 2014 and 2016\, texts by various Austrian authors served the composers in various pairings as a source of inspiration; in the performances\, music and text were sometimes intertwined\, the latter read by actors or the authors themselves\, sometimes being integrated directly in the composition itself live or e.g. as an edited or processed recording. In 2018 in turn\, the focus for all composers was put on one specific short text\, in 2020\, both text and music were created from scratch on a jointly developed theme and in 2022 Ferdinand Schmatz´s „das gehörte feuer. orphische skizzen“ was the starting point for the new compositions\, which partly included fragments of the text both in acoustic and visual ways aside from other parts being read by the author. \n  \nLike in former years\, with Schallfeld Ensemble also the musicians of course play an important role in the project\, being included in the process from the very beginning and standing in close connection specially with the composers for the realization of their new works. Throughout the different editions Schallfeld Ensemble has hereby presented itself in various line-ups. \n\n  \n\nFor 2024\, Elfriede Jelinek agreed that any of her numerous texts could function as impuls and starting point for new musical works\, which this time will be written for the very classical line-up of Schubert´s Forellenquintett. The world premieres will hereby come along with an introduction to Elfriede Jelinek by Claus Philipp\, who also accompanied the project as an intermediary to the writer and her literary work as well as to her musical background and (social-)political role. DESCRIPTION:Luigi Nono’s 100th birthday on January 29\, 2024 is the occasion for an Italian program focus: the Minguet Quartet celebrates it with his string quartet and older pieces to which Nono refers in it. Already in November\, our »Great Talent« Anton Gerzenberg and Marco Stroppa will interpret\, among others\, Nono’s »Traiettoria«\, a concerto for piano and electronic sounds and one of the great masterpieces of the 1980s. In March\, the Schallfeld Ensemble\, founded by students of Klangforum Wien in Graz\, will present works by Scelsi and Sciarrino as well as string trios by young Italian composers. His music\, which is often made by means of a high level of joy\, spans the genre between acoustic and electronic music and is often directed towards a dramatic and political core. His work has taken him to France and abroad\, where he has been involved in the creation of venues for new music\, classical music and\, for example\, for tango\, theatre\, art and electronic music. DESCRIPTION:Schallfeld Ensemble \nSchallfeld is an international ensemble for contemporary music based in Graz. The group inspires with virtuosity and sound sensitivity with a special attention to concert formats that creatively deal with the respective spatial conditions and open up a new dimension of listening. Schallfeld was founded in 2013 by alumni of Klangforum Wien. The artistic programming reflects the diversity and interests of its members\, currently musicians from 8 different countries. The ensemble attracts attention both through exciting programming with a focus on young composers and innovative concert stagings\, as well as through its work with live electronics and collective improvisations. \n\nEvery fourth Wednesday of the month\, vegetarian/vegan food is served for a voluntary donation.
