SUMMARY:Application Klangspuren Composers Lab 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Klangspuren Composers Lab (11.09. – 19.09.2023) is part of the Klangspuren Academy\, a successful new format initiated last year that is aimed at highly talented international and local composers pursuing a career as professional musicians. With its Composers Lab featuring annually changing instructors and musical partners\, Klangspuren Schwaz has created a place for encounter and learning for composers. For 2023\, it was able to enlist the collaboration of such excellent musical figures as the composers Chaya Czernowin and Klaus Lang\, from Israel and Austria respectively\, and the Graz-based Schallfeld Ensemble. The expertise of these instructors\, who also have pedagogical training\, will inspire the eight composers selected to participate in the workshop and give them new perspectives. For the participants\, the practical work of writing pieces specifically for the Schallfeld Ensemble will provide a reality check under excellent rehearsal conditions. \nThrough public master classes and concerts in Schwaz this “laboratory” will be deeply integrated into the festival. In this way\, the audience and other young composers will have the opportunity to closely observe the making of contemporary music and be able to follow the creation of new works\, their backgrounds and development. Participation in the Klangspuren Composers Lab will be determined by an international competition. Eight participants will be nominated in a two-stage selection process. There is no age limit for the applicants. The participants’ work will be premiered at the Klangspuren festival by the Schallfeld Ensemble on 18 September 2023. \nBy providing stipends\, Klangspuren seeks to make the projects accessible to all who are interested. In the selection process\, the professional qualifications will be taken into consideration in addition to applicants’s gender equality and diversity. We expressly welcome cultural and stylistic diversity in our musicians and composers\, as these enrich the musical discourse and have a uniting effect. \nApplications can be submitted from 13 February to 14 March 2023. \n\nClick here for the Klangspuren Application System 2023\n\nFACTS\nArrival and Departue: The punctual arrival of the participant on September 11 as well as his or her departure are the sole responsibility of the participant \nFees: The course fee is 450 euros and includes accommodation for eight nights in a single room with breakfast\, one private lesson each with Chaya Czernowin and Klaus Lang\, auditions\, professional recordings\, and free admission to all festival concerts. \nScholarships: A scolarship exempting participants from paying the participation fee is available. This stipend shall be awarded on a needs-oriented basis. \nAccommodation: Hotel-Gasthof Goldener Löwe\, Husslstraße 4\, 6130 Schwaz / Austria \nRehearsals: SZentrum Schwaz\, Knappensaal\, Andreas-Hofer-Str. 10\, 6130 Schwaz / Austria\nAll participants will receive a detailed rehearsal schedule in due time. \n

SUMMARY:The new normal
DESCRIPTION:Programm\nWilliam Dougherty The new normal \nMilica Djordjevic Rdja \nClaudio Panariello To Learn the Obscene Art of Suffering Pain \nEnsemble Kompositionsauftrag des Schallfeld Ensembles im Rahmen des StAiR (Styrian artist in residence) Programmes 2022 des Landes Steiermark \nMisato Mochizuki Chimera \n  \nAt the end of 2021\, when we conceived our 2022 season\, we wanted to focus on an optimistic (but still critical) reflection about the consequences of two years of pandemic in our lives and in the way we experience music together. \nSince February 2022\, the war and many other changes in the world gave a new and unexpected turn to the topics we choose for our concerts (Debris\, Nahe). \nIn our mind\, “The New Normal” stays probably  more close to its original meaning of a reunion to urgent socio-political and existential topics that we might have forgotten or recontextualized during the pandemic as in the last months.  \nThe piece “the new normal” by William Daugherty reminds us about social inequality (on a world scale as in his own country\, the USA)\, choosing a direct impact to the audience – however filtered through a calibrated work of collage from ethnomusicological material\, ancient music quotations and other samples. \nMoving from apparently objective scientific phenomena (oxidation and hybridation)\, the works by Milica Djordjevic and Misato Mochizuki bring us respectively to our “rusty”\,  jammed aptitude in the expression of  feelings as to alienating and extraneous processes of transformation. \nClaudio Panariello’s work (Styrian artist in residency 2022) mediates between the innest existential reflection about the experience of pain and its possible narrativity in our society\, which seem to mirror in the “impossible” antiphonal dialogue between a (human) instrumental ensemble and its analogic Doppelgänger – a feedback system driven by piezos microphones and loudspeakers. \nFree entry\, ticket reservation under office@schallfeldensemble.com.

From the very beginning\, the project has seen itself as a laboratory\, where medial interlacings with a focal point on impulses are put into practice. In specific\, literary texts as well as the active exchange between composer and author hereby provide the initial impulses for new compositions. The intention of the project hereby does not pursue a classical setting such as words to music\, nor a simple translation of the words with voices\, nor tonal representations of the texts – what is called for is rather texts functioning as movens with their\, for example\, rhythmic and syntactic qualities\, in its tonal coloration\, its timbre\, in its atmospheric or thematic density\, as semantic abutment\, … \nThe experimental setup of „Text im Klang” has always been slightly modified throughout the years: in 2014 and 2016\, texts by various Austrian authors served the composers in various pairings as a source of inspiration; in the performances\, music and text were sometimes intertwined\, the latter read by actors or the authors themselves\, sometimes being integrated directly in the composition itself live or f.e. as an edited or processed recording. In 2018 in turn\, the focus for all composers was put on one specific short text\, and in 2020\, both text and music were created from scratch on a jointly developed theme. \nLike in former years\, with Ensemble Schallfeld also the musicians of course play an important role in the project\, being included in the process from the very beginning and standing in close connection specially with the composers for the realisation of their new works. Throughout the different editions Ensemble Schallfeld has hereby presented itself in various line-ups. \nFor 2022\, impuls has been able to interest Ferdinand Schmatz for the project\, whose „das gehörte feuer. orphische skizzen“ (published in 2016) offers an ideal starting point for four new compositions commissioned by impuls not only thematically and in terms of sound language. The world premieres and the reading will again be presented in a dramaturgically developed evening on November 5th\, which will conclude the following day with an open brunch\, including reflections on the overall process of the project and an exchange with the audience on their impressions. \n  \n\n\n\n€ 16 | € 11* | € 6** \n* Pupils\, students\, conscripts/civil servants and unemployed persons with valid identity card \nTicket reservation: office@impuls.cc \n** Music students with valid ID at the box office and children up to 10 years of age \n*** Free admission for Hunger for Art & Culture at the box office from 15 minutes before the start of the concert. \nEnsemble Schallfeld as Ensemble in Residency at impuls is performing with co-funding by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. \n  \nText im Klang #5\n6.11.2022\, 10.00-13.00\nDiscourse : Open Brunch \nStatements by and discussion with the involved author\, composers and interpreters of the project “Text im Klang” after the premieres and reading on November 5th with Alexander Bauer | Víctor Morató Ribera | Sinan Samanlı | Manuel Zwerger | Ferdinand Schmatz | Ensemble Schallfeld \nhttps://www.impuls.cc/events-2022/611-text-im-klang \n  \n

SUMMARY:Time of music II: Systema Naturae
DESCRIPTION:Mauro Lanza & Andrea Valle: Systema Naturae \nThe cycle Systema Naturae includes four pieces. Its main feature is the use of acoustic instruments together with computer controlled physical objects placed in a specific spatial organization.\nTwo references are at the base of the whole cycle. The first is the medieval\, phantasmagoric tradition of bestiaria\, herbaria and lapidaria intended as multi-faceted catalogues of miscellaneous beings (animals\, stones\, plants). A second reference is taxonomy\, the systematic description of living organisms that dates back to Linnaeus’ Systema Naturae (hence the name of the cycle) as the rationalistic ordering of nature. As a consequence\, each piece is organized following the model of the catalogue\, as a collection of short pieces receiving an invented latin name. \n \nRegnum animale (2013) – For string trio and electromechanical objects \nRegnum vegetabile (2014) – For sextet and electromechanical objects \nRegnum lapideum (2016) – For ensemble and electromechanical objects \nFossilia (2016/17) – For ten musicians and electromechanical objects \n*** \nPart of the Ulysses project co-funded by Creative Europe.

SUMMARY:Civic Newsroom - Cocreations
DESCRIPTION:Three operas\, each written and composed by teams of seven people within three days\, and premiered on the evening of the third day: From May 19 to 22\, 2022\, our audience can witness this seemingly impossible task and its implementation live. “CIVIC NEWSROOM” is the name of the contemporary opera project that artistic director Carmen C. Kruse and creative producer Leonora Scheib have brought to life with their opera start-up\, “Civic Opera Creations” (COCREATIONS).\n\n\n\n\nThey bring a total of 21 composers\, librettists\, directors\, singers\, musicians\, stage and costume designers from Germany\, Great Britain\, Iran\, Italy\, Russia\, Sweden and Austria  together for this project and its subsequent premiere in Vienna. \nThe topics for the new short operas are specified by Kruse and Scheib\, as well as their cooperation partners: For the first issue of CIVIC NEWSROOM\, the areas are diversity & participation\, the hopes for the future & “What do I wish for tomorrow?”\, ecology & sustainability are starting points for the artistic work of the three teams. The artists take up current social issues and like reporter engage with local community members. They then use the skills of modern music theater to shine a new light on current discourses. \nThe following institutions were won as cooperation partners and venues for the first CIVIC NEWSROOM: KUNST HAUS WIEN/Museum Hundertwasser\, Kulturhaus Brotfabrik and CAPE 10 – House of Social Innovation. \nThe entire process of the three operas in development can be followed live via social media from May 19 to May 22. Anyone who is interested in partticipating has the opportunity to get involved directly on May 19 from 4:30 p.m. Three days later\, the audience is invited to see the end result in the form of sight-specific\, station theater with free admission and an exchangeof thoughts and  ideas with the participating artists aftter each performance. \n \nAdmission to all events is free. We kindly ask for advance registration up to the start of the performance via EMAIL: contact@cocreations.eu. \n\n\n\n  \nCIVIC OPERA CREATIONS (COCREATIONS) is a producer for new innovative music theater and opera created in dialogue and thought exchange between communities and artists. In connection with new technologies and impulses from interdisciplinary scenes\,we expand the traditional opera space and its narratives. Founded in Vienna in 2020\, COCREATIONS builds bridges between traditional and new structures and creates new methods of cooperation and reference to establish opera as a representative part of the 21st century and a place for repeated encounters. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore info in https://www.cckruse.com/civicnewsroom \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:HIER & JETZT
SUMMARY:Debris
\nPROGRAMM \nCathy van Eck: Empty Chairs (ÖEA)\nAndres Gutiérrez: Monolito B (ÖEA)\nDmitri Kourliandsky: Punctuation Marks\nHannes Kerschbaumer: pedra-debris Expanded version II \nSalvatore Sciarrino: Codex Purpureus \nPatricia Alessandrini: Ada’s Song (version 2021\, UA) \nSoprano: Kaoko Amano \n\n\nUPDATE: \nThe last week has seen unprecedented developments of events in Ukraine. We are shocked and express our deepest solidarity with the people suffering by the war as well as with our colleagues and friends who are affected by the events. Schallfeld consists of people from several continents and we believe that peaceful international collaboration is the foundation for mutual growth and understanding.\nIn the light of what happens right now\, we want to dedicate this music to the support of people suffering in Ukraine. The entry is free\, but we ask for your donations which will be all given for directly supporting the humanitarian actions of ORF – Nachbar in Not. \nContemporary music always is intimately connected to social and political movements. Performing music from composers all over the world for us means to set a sign for peace. We hope that doing and enjoying music together helps to build bridges for a better future.
