The inner limit of an object
It is always a matter of space, regardless of which one. A tangle of organized relationships, and the development of a new one. This piece is about the relationship between hidden sonic elements which belong to a musical gesture. It is a trio between the double bass, the flute and the electronics, which influence each other and stimulate an acoustical and digital system of interdependencies, by exploring the inner space of their instrument in an open counterpoint developed in real time.
There is but the light to carry us
This trio continues my exploration of fine-tuned microtonal harmonic spaces. Being the second panel of a vast chamber music cycle – of which my solo-cello piece « Ultimi Fiori » is the first part – it is linked to be latter by keeping the same scordatura of the cello, to whom the harmonically complementary tuning of the violin is added. Also the piano uses mainly flageolet sounds that alter its timbrical quality and allow it to weave its thread in this fabric of non-tempered pitches. The entire work pivots around the collision of an underlying tempered structure – the traditional tuning of the piano – and the finely microtonal structure given by the scordatura of the string instruments and the piano flageolets. One of the central questions dealt with in this piece is how to re-formulate the structural and harmonic sense of modulation as well as that of harmony that generates syntax (and does not just produce harmonic aggregates). The title of the piece « There is but light to carry us » is a kind of counterbalance to the threnody «Ultimi Fiori». It also shares the same projection towards a limit point, meant both in a technical/compositional and a philosophical/spiritual sense. Facing the aporia of theory/vision (from the Greek word ἀπορία: exitless or impracticable path) stands the point of view of the title « There is but the light to carry us»
Step turn
The fabric of the context of „Step turn“ is discontinuous and turbulent. I used for that a cell, which does not reveal itself completely in this piece, as axis of organization. These cells, or their derivative partial forms reappear as attractors structuring the space into a gestural fragment. So, the musical flow does not progress linearly but by a complex combination of blocks from the initial discreet cell“.
Thin film interference
The optical phenomenon known as Thin Film Interference describes the refractory behavior of light on overlapped thin layers of material. Visual phenomena such as the iridescence of oil on water, nacre from the inside of an oyster, the scales on the wings of moths and butterflies, etc. are explained in this way. This metaphoric artifact works as a model for almost the totality of the dimensions of the piece: construction of harmonic processes, transformation and evolution of timbre, textural operations on density and polyphony, rhythmical structures, to name a few. A second key aspect of the project is the use of real-time electronics (processed with MAX/MSP on a 8 channel circular display around the audience). The system works as a polyphonic granular synthesizer that samples the instruments in real time and processes the sound through complex granulation patterns, generating a shifting, warped perception of the physical space through spatial encoding. Thin film interference is my last attempt to articulate a musical discourse based on relationships of hybridization, both as source of material and as a backbone element of the writing.

Davide Gagliardi
Guionnet.
